Sourcing hoodies: fabric, weight and print decisions
Two hoodies at the same price can feel completely different. The difference is usually the fleece weight, the rib and whether the fabric was pre-shrunk.

The fabric choices
| Spec | Budget | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 280–320 gsm | 350–400 gsm |
| Yarn | Carded | Combed or combed-carded blend |
| Back | Brushed fleece | Loopback or brushed with anti-pilling |
| Rib | 1x1, light | 2x2, heavier with elastane |
| Shrinkage | 5–8% | Under 5%, pre-shrunk |
Where the cost hides
- Weight: 400 gsm uses roughly 30% more yarn than 300 gsm.
- Rib: a heavy 2x2 rib with elastane costs more than a light 1x1.
- Print: screen setup per colour versus digital with no setup.
- Trims: drawcords, eyelets, zip quality.
What to specify
- GSM and tolerance on finished fabric.
- Rib composition and stretch recovery.
- Shrinkage after the wash on the care label.
- Print method, colours and placement.
- MOQ per colour, including the rib.
FAQ
Is heavier always better?
Up to a point. Above 400 gsm the garment gets stiff and the shipping cost rises faster than the perceived quality.
Why does the hood shrink more than the body?
The hood is often cut from a different panel with a different grain. Check the shrinkage on both.
