Recycled polyester: what rPET actually changes
Recycled polyester is chemically similar to virgin polyester, which is both the point and the problem: the performance is close, so the difference has to be proven, not felt.

Two sources
- Bottle-to-fibre: PET bottles are cleaned and melted into chips. The dominant route, and generally consistent in quality.
- Textile-to-textile: waste fabric is chemically or mechanically recycled. Better in principle, harder to keep clean and consistent.
What changes in the fabric
Mechanically recycled polyester can have slightly lower tenacity and more colour variation, because the input stream is not uniform. Chemically recycled material behaves much like virgin.
Dyeability can differ, so the lab dip matters more than usual. Contamination from the waste stream shows up as dark specks after dyeing.
What you can claim
- “Made with recycled polyester” needs a percentage and a certificate behind it.
- GRS or RCS certification, with a transaction certificate for the shipment.
- Do not claim “ocean plastic” unless the feedstock is traceable to that source.
- Carbon claims need a lifecycle assessment, not a supplier statement.
FAQ
Is recycled polyester weaker?
Usually comparable if chemically recycled; mechanically recycled can be slightly lower. Test if strength matters.
Does it still shed microplastics?
Yes. Recycling changes the feedstock, not the shedding behaviour.
